The Veterans Service Advocate is a part-time direct service position responsible for meeting the needs of veterans who reside in the Welcome House GPD program. This position is expected to assess situations and resident needs, and to be comfortable making decisions to maintain the safety of the facility and its residents. This position performs duties in accordance with Welcome House Core Values, including: Compassion, Advocacy, Integrity, Quality, Leadership, and Community
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Meet Needs of Residents/Agency
• Provide residents with needed personal items.
• Advocates for clients when necessary, and empowers clients to advocate for themselves, when appropriate.
• Assist Program Coordinator with maintaining accurate and up-to-date documentation of individual service plans, case notes, change of status documents and other reporting and tracking forms when needed.
• Providing essential services necessary to reach out to unsheltered homeless people; connect them with emergency shelter, housing, or critical services.
• Provides transportation for residents as needed.
• Accepts donations and deliveries as needed.
• Works with volunteers.
2. Maintain the Physical Safety of the Building
• Walks the house at least every hour
• Monitors shelter/agency phone and shelter front door
• Provides a safe environment
• Shares in the cleanliness of the workspace and performs required tasks to maintain a building
well-prepared for residential service, including basic maintenance tasks
• Documents pertinent information regarding residents in VESTA/resident files.
• Provides a concise and comprehensive resident update and general operations information to staff/volunteer upon shift turnover as well as informing Program Coordinator with
• Maintains up to date client list.
• Minimum High school diploma or equivalent
• 0-12-month experience in related field
• Experience working with population desirable but not required
• Excellent communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Precise record keeping skills
• Proficient in problem solving
• Proficient in conflict resolution
• Proficient in collaboration, both internally and externally

• Understands agency vision/mission and how to achieve agency goals
• Adept at meeting client needs, to maintain the safety of shelter and it’s residents

• Accurately completes paperwork and activities required by funding sources
• Appropriately uses PTO, maintains good attendance, and accurately tracks and reports time
• Ability to maintain effective relationship with residents and co-workers
• Work typically performed in an indoor, 3-floor office building with stairs only
Tools and Equipment Used
• Personal computer, copier, fax/scanner, phone, and other typical office equipment.
• Minimal-less than 25% of the time.
Physical and Mental Demands
• Frequently required to sit at a desk/workstation for long period of time
• Ability to work at a computer terminal for extended periods of time
• Digital dexterity and hand/eye coordination in operation of office equipment
• Ability to speak to and hear employees/clients via phone or in person
• Body motor skills sufficient to enable incumbent to move between 3 floors
• Additional Mental Requirements: compare, decide, direct, problem solve, analyze, instruct, interpret
• Minimum lifting up to and above 50 pounds
