The Emergency Shelter provides a safe supportive temporary home for women and children who are homeless. Residents are provided with basic necessities in a caring and nurturing environment while staff assist them in planning for income and housing. Collaboration with other agencies brings a variety of supportive services such as legal support, mental health counseling and nursing care to the shelter.
Total served in 2007: 290 individuals (189 adults and 101 children). 35% of the children were birth to 5 years old.
Unit cost: one individual per day - $34.
Average length of stay – 35 days.
Adults with disabilities – 58%.
Of the 9,000 projected number of bed nights in 2007, Welcome House provided 9,689 nights of shelter.
Overall 46% obtained housing; however, for those who stayed 3 weeks or longer this outcome increased to 65%.
For residents who stayed 3 weeks or longer 80% obtained income on exit in contrast to 12% for those who stayed less than 3 weeks.
